EMERYVILLE, Calif. The National Marrow Donor
Program(R) (NMDP) accepted a prestigious 2000 Computerworld Smithsonian
Award
for its solution to an unmet medical need utilizing innovative
Sybase, Inc., (Nasdaq: SYBS) technology. The custom solution for the NMDP
was
judged to be a world-class information technology achievement. A case study
of the award-winning technology will be permanently added to the
Smithsonian's
collection of information technology research, chronicling highlights of the
Information Age.
"As a worldwide leader in e-business solutions, we are particularly
honored that our customer, The National Marrow Donor Program, has received
this distinguished award for solutions developed for the critical healthcare
vertical market," said John Chen, chairman, president and CEO of Sybase.
"In

proud to facilitate our customer's efforts to enhance and enrich our
society."
The Computerworld Smithsonian Awards were founded in 1988 to document
the
rapid revolution in information technology and recognize innovative vision
and
leadership. Since 1991, 185 Sybase customers have been nominated for the
Computerworld Smithsonian Awards, including 16 finalists and three category
winners. Each winning case study is permanently housed and available for
review at the Archives Center in the National Museum of American History,
Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.
National Marrow Donor Program
Created in 1986, the Minneapolis-based NMDP is a non-profit organization
that facilitates unrelated donor stem cell transplants for patients with
life-threatening blood diseases who do not have matching donors in their
families. Currently, the NMDP facilitates more than 100 transplants each
month. The NMDP provides a single point of access for all sources of blood
stem cells used in transplantation: marrow, peripheral blood and umbilical
cord blood. The Registry is able to search its own database and provide
physicians with information on multiple stem cell sources for life-saving
transplants. Since it began operations in 1987, the NMDP has provided
transplants to almost 10,000 patients.
With the utilization of Sybase's Enterprise Application Server(TM),
Power J(R), PowerDesigner(R), Adaptive Server(R) Enterprise, and Replication
Server(R) products, the NMDP is able to match marrow and blood stem cell
donors with patients in need of transplants efficiently.
Founded in 1988, the Computerworld Smithsonian Program searches for and
recognizes individuals who have demonstrated vision and leadership as they
