Leukemia Society Calls For Action On Cancer Bill

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Dec. 12 — The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has put out an action alert asking its 58 chapters and thousands of volunteers to write letters to their congressional representatives to bring the Labor-HHS Appropriations bill to a vote.

"This legislation, which already has bipartisan support, is critical to secure substantial increases for cancer research and community programs for fiscal year 2001."

This legislation, which already has bipartisan support, is critical to secure substantial increases for cancer research and community programs for fiscal year 2001.

Working as part of the One Voice Against Cancer (a collaboration of 48 cancer and public health organizations), The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society recognizes that cures cannot be found without research — and additional funding is essential to advance new cancer clinical trials, drugs and cancer therapies that can save lives. For example, more than 200,000 Americans may not find new treatments to help them survive one of the six deadliest cancers — multiple myeloma, pancreatic, stomach, liver, esophageal and lung, without additional funding.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, headquartered in White Plains, N.Y., is the fastest growing nationwide voluntary health organization. For fiscal year 2000, the Society raised over $130 million to support its mission of finding cures for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
